A man objected to his tax assessment for box 3 (savings and investments tax), because he had paid negative interest. Initially, the Tax Authority disagreed, but the court eventually ruled in the man's favor. According to the judge, the actually paid and received interest had to be taken into consideration. The man had proven that he had paid interest instead of receiving it, and that this had a negative effect on his assets. The man had saved money, which had increased his assets, not because he had received interest. He was ultimately proven right, which means that if you pay interest on your assets, this will be considered as negative income in box 3.
